Peters Township High School Media Department offered a new television sports production class this fall taught by Mr. Kevin Bastos. Bastos and veteran media teacher, Mrs. Robin Hodgin-Frick, developed the course this past summer. The current class includes 11 enthusiastic students who learn about all areas of sports broadcasting including fieldwork, promotional packages, sports announcing, and combined broadcasting techniques. Students engage in hands-on experiences while learning how to create content that highlights school athletics. Participation in sports broadcasting can lead to various career paths in journalism, public relations, sports management, and broadcasting. Students will have opportunities to build portfolios that showcase their work. Thus, students involved in sports programming gain a better understanding of media production, including video editing, broadcasting, and marketing. This knowledge is increasingly relevant in today’s digital landscape.
Mr. Bastos intends to produce one show during the first nine weeks, followed by four more in the second, offering students valuable opportunities to develop their skills in front of and behind the camera. This unique program not only enhances technical abilities but also fosters teamwork and creativity as students collaborate on projects.
