Over the years, the PTHS library has been a staple of the school with many resources and events available. However, this year the library will be operating a bit differently, as librarian Mrs. Rose will be on maternity leave and the library secretary, Mrs. Gobbie is also helping out in the counseling office.
During an average year, the library offers a variety of resources, from a student Writing Lab to SAT and scholarship preparation and practice. Students with a free period also have the option of applying to be a library assistant, where they can help restock shelves, check out books, reshelve returned books, and more. Most activities, including library assistants, will be discontinued until Mrs. Rose returns in February, but the library will be open as a place to study and gather information for research projects.
Another activity that is on a momentary pause is the Book Club. The PTHS Book Club is a student-led club here at the high school sponsored by Mrs. Rose. The club typically meets once a month after school to discuss the group’s current read and pick a book for the next month. Fortunately, it has the possibility of starting up again in February when Mrs. Rose returns.
Although Book Club is being put on a hold, reading doesn’t have to stop. The Peters Township Public Library offers an event called “Novel November”, which happens annually.
“They’ve had Taylor Jenkins Reid, they’ve had, last year V.E. Shwab. This year it is Patrick Radden Keefe, he wrote “Empire of Pain” which is about pharmaceutical companies and the Sackler Dynasty and the opium epidemic,” said Mrs. Rose
Keeffe is an award winning author and writer that will be visiting the high school this year. His book, “Empire of Pain” discussed pharmaceutical companies, the Sackler Dynasty, and the opium epidemic in the 1990s.
