The Peters Township High School Boys Golf team is currently undefeated and showing no signs of slowing down. With a string of dominant wins under their belts, the team has set their sights on a state championship title. Leading the team for the Indians is senior standout Colton Lusk, who has been the top scorer this season.
Coach Kuhn guides the team that boasts a talented roster with depth in all areas. With seven seniors on the varsity team, they all contribute. The team also has some strong younger players who can step in when needed. Lusk’s recent performance at the 2023 State Championship where he shot a 65, has further solidified his position as a top contender in the state. Lusk, a four year starter, recently tied a school record for lowest score in a match, and has been a key part in the team’s success this season. His consistent play and leadership have been crucial during the team’s close wins against opponents like North Allegheny, Central Catholic, and Upper St. Clair.
The team’s success isn’t solely reliant on individual talent. A strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork is evident both on and off the course. Players are quick to support and encourage each other, fostering a positive and competitive environment.
“Hard work and persistence is what we all focus on when achieving. We also just focus on day-to-day, not the end goal when playing,” said Lusk.
The team pushes each other to be better every day, and their work ethic is truly remarkable. They are taking it one match at a time, but they are confident in their ability to win.
“My goals are to win another state and WPIAL championship and I’m most looking forward to doing it with my team,” said senior Nick Haught.
On September 16, the team played the individual rounds for the WPIAL qualifier. The varsity team achieved their goal of five players qualifying for the sectional individual championship, which was played on Tuesday, September 24 where Colton Lusk, Griffin Hansberry, and Ryan Watterson all shot qualifying scores to advance to the final round of the WPIAL Individual Championship next week at Oakmont Country Club.
Sometimes the team faces some struggles, like high scores, missed putts, and competition on the side which can sidetrack them but has found a way to manage these adverse situations.
“When things are going bad on the course or I begin to lose motivation I try to step back and think about what my end goal is, which is to win a state championship with my friends in our senior year,” said senior Ryan Watterson
The team believes in each other to achieve their goals and end their senior season strong by winning another state championship.
“Being given the opportunity to win the state championship last year was awesome, so the only thing that I need to motivate me is the idea of a winning a second one,” said Watterson
Their undefeated streak and unwavering determination have made them the top team in the WPIAL.
